Becoming a volunteer firefighter is a rewarding experience that allows you to make a difference in your community while also developing valuable skills. We are always looking for dedicated individuals to join our team and we encourage you to reach out if you are interested in becoming a part of the Oxford Fire Department family.
The Fire Explorer program is chartered through the Boy Scouts of America and is for young men and women, ages 14 (and have completed 8th grade) to 20, who are interested in Firefighter training, emergency medical training and community service. The Explorers receive training on a regular basis to familiarize themselves with the fire and emergency medical service career.
All explorers are supervised by New York State Certified Firefighters or EMS personnel who meet all the necessary criteria and background checks. Explorers are not placed in situations either in training or real life that will threaten their health and well-being. Safety is our highest priority.

The Restricted Active Member program was launched with aspirations of getting young people in our community and fire district to join the Village of Oxford Fire Department to observe and perform hands on training / work.
Our goal is to prepare these young people to be the safest and well-trained firefighters that they can be, for their sake and for the sake of all people living in the fire district that these young people will be serving to protect.
Membership Requirements
Any resident within our fire district who is 16 years of age or older that is attending/enrolled in high school will be allowed to submit an application for membership to the department.

No experience? Not a problem, we will provide all the training you will need to benefit in a rewarding volunteer career. Choose the path of interest and skill-set you wish to participate in and we will do the rest.
An interior fire fighter is a highly trained and skilled member who specializes in entering burning structures to fight fires from inside. They are equipped with personal protective gear such as helmets, masks, Coats, Pants, boots, gloves LUNAR thermal cameras and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) that allow them to enter smoke-filled buildings safely. They also use various tools and techniques to extinguish flames, including water hoses, foam agents, and ventilation tactics. This type of operation is known as an offensive strategy.
In addition to fighting fires on the front lines, interior firefighters also perform other duties such as conducting search and rescue operations for trapped individuals, performing emergency medical care until paramedics arrive, and assisting with clean-up and salvage efforts after a fire is extinguished.
Training is provided through NYS Office of Fire Prevention and Control and taught by experts and delivered through outreach courses taught by NYS instructors. Additional training comes from sources including on-line and departmental held training.
An exterior firefighter is responsible for responding to calls and providing support in the initial stages of a fire. They work closely with incident command providing them with vital information about the fire's location and severity then relayed to interior firefighters through incident command. Exterior firefighters use specialized equipment such as ladders, hoses, and hand tools to contain and control the fire from the outside before interior crews enter the building. In some cases fires are fought entirely from outside the structure when it is determined to be to dangerous for interior operations in a defensive strategy known as defensive operations.

An apparatus operator is responsible for driving and operating fire department vehicles, also known as apparatus. In the Oxford Fire Department, this position requires extensive training and experience. Apparatus operators must have a thorough understanding of fire department procedures, road safety regulations, and the capabilities of each vehicle with the ability to operate the apparatus tools and mechanical equipment located on each individual apparatus.
Training is provided through NYS Office of Fire Prevention and Control and taught by experts and delivered through outreach courses taught by NYS instructors. Additional training comes from sources including on-line and departmental held training.
Auxiliary members play a crucial role in supporting the operations of the Oxford Fire Department. They are volunteers who work alongside volunteer firefighters and assist with non-emergency tasks, allowing the department to allocate more resources to emergency response.
Some duties of auxiliary members may include administrative tasks, fundraising efforts, community outreach programs, and providing support at emergency scenes by supplying water or food to firefighters. Additional duties consist of assisting EMS in Rehab operations of individual firefighters in recording vitals and assisting in cooling or warming of personnel along with providing comfort to victims of an incident. They also help maintain equipment and facilities, ensuring that everything is in proper working condition.
Community Emergency Response Team (CERT):
Crowd Control/Traffic Control / Fire Police:
Administrative and supporting members of the Oxford Fire Department play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of the department. They handle administrative tasks such as record-keeping, budget management, and maintaining equipment inventory.
Station Maintenance/Emergency Shelter Support Team:
Public Education Educator provide education to the community, especially children and the elderly and are handled by the Oxford Fire Departments Weather preparedness and fire prevention education team. They utilize props, live demonstrations and fire prevention facts aided by a fire prevention trailer. This trailer is portable and travels to many different events or functions within our and surrounding communities. The team educates many groups and organizations sometimes on their premises within and outside of Chenango County.
